Press Backgrounder

Villeneuve Construction Co. Ltd. is Northern Ontario’s premier construction company. Incorporated in 1976, Villeneuve Construction now serves communities between Kirkland Lake and Nipigon, with offices and fleet yards in Hearst and Cochrane, as well as facilities spanning almost 1,000 kilometres across Ontario’s north, including concrete and asphalt production plants, wood waste disposal sites and aggregate resource pits and quarries.

Company History

It all started with a small-wheel backhoe back in 1971. Claude Villeneuve established Villeneuve Construction by serving the needs of his immediate community of Hallébourg. In 1976, the venture became incorporated and began operations as a construction business in Ontario. Five years later, Ghislain Lacroix partnered with Claude to become part owner and Vice President in the company, and three years later, operations were moved to Hearst, where the new headquarters were established to better serve the greater community.

After over a decade of gaining valuable experience as a residential and commercial construction company, Villeneuve Construction won its first municipal contract in Hearst, improving the sewage and water system. With the business growing, the company decided to expand operations through the acquisition of Chega, a local concrete supplier and excavation contractor.

This strategic decision paved the way to Villeneuve Construction’s expansion to date. Villeneuve Construction saw further expansion and diversification in the 1990s, with the acquisition of its first quarry and asphalt plant, and culminating in the building of a brand new state-of-the-art maintenance facility for the company’s growing fleet of modern, efficient equipment and heavy machinery.

Beginning in 2003, multiple joint ventures and collaborations with First Nations communities entrenched Villeneuve Construction as a community-focused construction firm, building its presence over the last 17 years both through collaborations as well as through acquisitions of local operations.

Villeneuve Construction is now a leading construction company in Northern Ontario, employing over 300 people during peak seasons, and working with municipal and provincial governments, private corporations, and First Nations communities. The company also owns and operates over 200 aggregate sources throughout northern Ontario, along Hwy 11 and Hwy 17, as far north as Moosonee.
